Battle of the Bands @ The Castle

This past weekend saw the start of The Castle Irish Bar's very own "battle of the bands competition". This weekends bands ranged from lairy punk to incomprehensible metal. But as of yet there hasn't been any dubstep.

Seeing as I'm behind the bar all the time concentrating on "pouring the perfect Guinness" I haven't had that good a chance to listen to the acts we've had so far. But next weekend it's all happening again with bands like Despair Academy who are known to be good at winning this sort of contest and Tank who are so fresh and new that they might not even have any songs yet.

It's 2€ to get in Friday and Saturday and I'll be waiting to fulfill all of your alcoholic/non-alcoholic fantasies. This is one you probably could miss, but you know some of these acts are the type that you might never see otherwise. Either through them being absolute shit or just that you'd never hit upon them out in the cold bleakness of Turku

Right. That was the prep. Now I'll either see you there or I won't. Either way, I still get paid.

Having a serious Esben & The Witch moment

I think I'm a bit obsessed. Obsession often ends up with stalking and then someone getting horrificly mutilated/killed if we're to be believe what the likes of bolly/hollywood keeps telling us. I'm pretty adamant on not getting mutilated. At least not outside the bedroom. Eh Eh.

Er
anyway.

Esben & The Witch signed to Matador Records some time this year, making them the first UK band signed to Matador in about a million years. Using their new-fandangle record label the Brightonians have released the Marching Song single also featuring a couple of new tracks.

So that's on its way in the post. But as if that wasn't enough I also found myself pre-ordering their up 'n' coming debut LP Violet Cries. That should hit my postbox sometime in January.

You can download the new track Warpath from here

I guess I really do like this band.

Warpaint finally on spotify

Post title sums it all up. The brilliant Warpaint album The Fool is finally on spotify. It's been up for streaming for a while now on various sites. That's how I know it is brilliant. But now it's on the BIG S you do whatevers with it. Play it offline. Play it inbetween endless Justin Beiber adverts. Scrobble that shit. Whatever you want baby. Let's do it.

I think it's also available to be purchased instead of spotify/illegal torrents, but I can't be sure.

Warpaint - The Fool on Spotify

Seriously gutted I missed these at TGE. Everyone's saying these were the epitome of greatness. Of course they'd say that though.

There ain't no vampires here

I promise I'll get back to "reporting"/blog-loving some of the almost-newest shit-hot music acts out there pretty soon. But tonight I'm celebrating. Exam-week's over already. F**k knows if I've passed, but that's hardly the point. It's gone. It's over.

Bought a painting today. Not sure if it's anything to do with celebrating. In fact I can't even remember what it looks like. I left it in the shop.

Just wanted to chill tonight and celebrate like an adult. Drink some gran sangre, look at some art. Maybe read something by Nabokov.

Well. I've got the wine. And I've also got a handful (well maybe more than a handful) of Four Tet tunes and remixes to keep me occupied.

Here y'are. You too can pretend to be me after exam week. It's simple. All you have to do is follow this extremely easy to follow playlist and you too can be me!

New Lykke Li

Hey man!

Go get yourself the new Lykke Li track Get Some right here from her website. You'll also get the b-side of her new single, Paris Blue. Or alternatively you can just watch these videos of them.

Or if you'd rather do neither you could just oggle at this amazing picture of her by Patricia Reyes.

Monday funday

I always used to laugh at Linkin Park because all their songs followed pretty much the same pattern and sounded pretty much exactly the same. I used to laugh at people comparing all their albums and bitching about which one's the the shit and which one's plain shit, when they're all in fact exactly the same. I used to laugh at people who said 'LP' were torchbearers for creating this insane style combining rap and guitars and singing/shouting. I used to laugh at people who forced me to listen to LP in order to "see the big picture".

Just a bit a go, I was in the presence of a tv. Quite the rare commodity where I live. I turned on MTV. You know, hoping to catch a glimpse of some super sweet 16 year olds getting MADE whilst having their rooms raided back at Jersey Shore.

MADE. I love MADE. Ugly people who want to be made pretty is a genius concept. Something Mr. Walt Disney already knew back in the middle ages.

MADE wasn't on. MTV were showing random music videos for some reason. I was well gutted. I wanted to watch some jackass Paris Hilton's new BFF get punk'd in the Hills.

Linkin Park's "amazing" video for their "amazing" new song Waiting for the End came on and I was taken aback. Shit, I was breathless. Have LP done this to stop me laughing at them?

According to Wikipedia, LP once released an album called Hybrid Theory. Seems they've developed a new "hybrid theory". Some kind of Turin Brakes/Fun Lovin' Criminals cross-breed.

The Turin Brakes song I wanted to 'embed' on here had disabled its embed function. Probably don't want to be associated with LP.
It was Painkiller.

It is better than this: (but hats of to LP for doing something a bit different)

That's enough from me now.

A pick of two up 'n' coming gigs

This post is quite irrelevant if you feel you're not going to be in the vicinity of Turku on these specific dates: 30.10 or 9.12.

First up we've got the very very lovely Anna von Hausswolff playing Dynamo on the Saturday 30.10

Her Singing From the Grave album is probably one of my album picks of the year. Hugely emotive piano-led tracks reminiscent of Kate Bush or White Chalk era PJ Harvey. The only problematic thing about her gig is that it's on a Saturday and I for one can't get Saturdays off work. So I guess I'm gonna have to miss the Swedish songstress, but don't you make the same mistake as me!

next up is Awesome Tapes From Africa aka. Brian Shimkovitz responsible for the shit hot blog Awesome Tapes From Africa bringing you/me/everyone the most obscure African music recordings you could ever wish to find. He played a set at Flow Festival during the summer but I missed that, so I don't intend on missing this one. Playing in the small but wicked cool surroundings of Bar Kuka, this is going to get busy, so sort yourself out a spot/ticket/whatever. See you there!

Here's the facebook event if you need more info

Mon Khmer

If the lovely people at Hi-Scores Recording Library keep sending their latest awesome releases at me at this quality and this rate I think I'll have to start paying them something soon.

But whilst it's all done hush hush, I think I'll just be happy with the way things are.

Mon Khmer's new EP Birthplace is raising all the right questions.

That is if what does Mon Khmer even mean is the right question?

(From their tumblr page)

Mon Khmer:
Pronounced mohn-kmair
–noun
1. A group of Austroasiatic languages

Anyway these fellas certainly can string together a few cracking indie guitar tunes.
In fact, I was quite surprised they weren't from olde Blighty with tunes like Anniversary getting a bit britpoppy in your face.

It's not all the same throughout. Britpop flies out the window when talking about the title track, which inadvertedly reminds me of Husky Rescue's Country Falls (only because of the slide guitar).

Birthplace is a quality EP from a band that actually play real intruments. (What's up with that, I mean it IS 2010)

Mon Khmer are playing gigs with all sorts of other household/less household names (Kisses, Baths, Yuck, Dominant Legs) so I guess my approval is hardly neccessary, but there you are guys anyway. You have it.

Why doesn't anyone tell me these things

Right so get this. Apparently I've got an exam tomorrow. I found out about this roughly an hour ago.

I guess this means no huge postings today my darlings. To give you an idea of what I should know by tomorrow I'll just let this aptly named Cajun Dance Party tune do the talking.

You know because of the enzyme. eh eh?
(very rarely do music and biochemistry come into acquaintance)

Oh and just btw if you haven't yet listened to it, I strongly suggest you listen to the new Darkstar album. It's immense.
Here's the title track

and here's er the not title track song but also equally immense gold

Mickey Brown

I was like totes' gonna start a series of posts today about Finnish bands and tunes, but then I thought I'd save that idea for a bit later.

And instead of something Finnish I've opted for something completely er not Finnish in the form of a collaboration between LA's Mickey Mickey Rourke and Canadian Lester Brown, which forms Mickey Brown. (I know! Where did the name come from?)

Dems got a new single out titled Soul Glo and seeing as I've only now been informed of this via e-mail and Bandcamp's telling me that it was released back in march, I'm not sure what's happened to all the promotion.

Forget March 2010, this tune could easily have been from the mid-80's. I'll let you do the naming of which band Never Cry reminds you of. But like the man himself (MMR) says it is a fun old pop tune.

Listen to it yourself, let your hair down and don't be so 'effin serious all the time.

Oh yeah, I might start a video posting theme on here starting from now.

This is what I got when I typed in Amazing Aerobics.

Is it amazing? Is it even aerobics? is it just average aerobics?

GuMMy†Be▲R! - What?

It's time to delve into the obscure and "überhip" world of witch house. Or rape gaze or, my favourite one, trianglecore. Whichever name takes your fancy. In the end it's pretty much all the same as long as you've got ▲s and †s in your artistic title and got promo pics that look a bit like this

If you want to join this hip-parade, why not find your own perfect witch house band name using this here nifty name generator

http://chillwitchnamemagic.com/

So as some of you may have by now guessed. All this sounds a bit ridiculous, no?
This whole palaver, would seem a huge time wasting shame if it were'nt backed by decent tunes. So I downloaded myself a copy of GuMMy†Be▲R!'s latest EP Inauspicious in an attempt to further educate myself.

Things observed whilst listening:

a) It's wrong to hate because of silly monikers
b) American religious extremists are a bit silly
c) Slowed down hip hop sounds très cool.

The links to download all his tracks are on the Myspace page and here's the preview video to his up and coming LP

Throwing Snow

This must be the appropriate time to write about Throwing Snow seeing as it should actually start snowing pretty soon.

He's a UK-based producer who seems to be mixing it up in terms of dubstep, folktronica and downtempo beats.

Basically all I've ever wanted.

The newer stuff, including a remix for Gold Panda, is more dubsteppy whereas you could be forgiven for thinking more Kieran Hebden with the older tunes.

The/A breakup

Breakups are usually always reaction-provoking. Even when it happens to someone you don't really even know. If someone's telling you that x has broken up with y and you couldn't really be too fussed about it, you still try to feign a reaction. Sometimes however you genuinely do care. During the last couple of weeks a few people I know and a few more people I don't know have gone through the whole break-up process leading me to the conclusion that the time of summer flings must now-a-bouts be officially over. If it were just summer flings that were ending now, it would be all fine (in a way), but there's also doing it that have been together for pretty much forever. Is that the way we work as social individuals? Winter comes 'a knocking and everyone gets the urge to start a solo-hibernation?

If you couldn't be arsed reading that long a text then I handily rustled up an awesome painting of the above paragraph for your convenience.

You're welcome

The same applies to bands and music and the likes. You can get attached to a band or a genre, and when the band breaks up/ genre fizzes out, it can be like coming out of a meaningful relationship the hard way. One you'll never have back. At least not in the same kind of way.

I had high hopes for Reina Del Camino. I had dreams for them. But they went and cruched all my hopes and dreams. Now all I can say is RIP RDC. May you fovever rock on in our (my) memories.

Aaron & The Sea

I had one of these guys' tracks in one of my mixtapes ages ago, but never got round to writing an actual post about them. Despite this lazyness of mine Aaron & The Sea are doing to me what Justin Timberlake was doing to teenage girls back in t'day.

No hang on. Not JT, but more like the Maroon 5 of the now. How does that sound?

When I read it myself it sounds appalling. Truth is though, it ain't. Lead singer Aaron seems to have a knack for some pretty inspired vocals where the band lay out different vibes. Chilled, soulful, four-to-the-floor. Hot stuff (good) but there's probs always going to be "mainstream M5-esque" comparisons (maybe bad?)

Hell, however unhip these guys might be deemed by "the elite" they'll definitely have a place in the annals of er.. my ipod.

Pick up the Seconds and Shapes album as well as new single Return of the Nothing from here.

Memory Screen again

I wrote about Memory Screen back in day. And turns out the man behind the name has been busier than a mosquito's tweeter. Well maybe not that busy. But busy enough to treat all (read. some) of us to his new EP
Ooh and this time I snooped around a bit more and found a video for this here, right here.

memory screen ep from silent farm on Vimeo.

I think I'm getting quite good at this.
And if you want to feel what I'm feeling you could always download the EP from here

I don't know what the hell I'm even writing. Maybe I'm on those druggy-thingies without even knowing it.

No actually, come to think of it I might actually be hungry.
Bit of food and wine and a bit of chilling with Memory Screen. Yeah. Me thinks that's a plan.

What you do.
YOU DECIDE (in a scottish accent. You know like Big Brother-man)

I'm off now. Got some Chilean shiraz and not a lot of food a'waitin'

toodles

Work - Home

Walking home from work is always a bit interesting. Usually it happens at 4/5 o'clock in the morning fridays and saturdays. I guess as a weekend-bartender I see people pretty near their weakest moments. Tonight was no different. Trudging home through the piles of sick. Climbing over the masses of passed out pissheads. Dodging screaming police cars whilst trying to avoid the infamous Turku attempted-rapist.

Listening to SALEM whilst walking home hardly helps in feeling more secure does it?

It felt a bit scary and a bit claustrophobic but also a slightly cool and a bit like listening to the dubsteppy version of the UEFA Champions League anthem.

Seeing Suge

When three of your favourite in-the-moment music makers combine forces, it can rarely be bad. Seeing as Emay, Blackbird Blackbird and Star Slinger are all AndygoesdowntoChinatown favourites I can hardly find any reasons not to write about this brilliant track that arrived in my virtual postbox yesterday.

Seeing Suge is the name of this collab project and Breaking is the name if their first single

Breaking also samples another AGDCT-favourite Memoryhouse, making this just one huge swirling music-orgy.

Download Seeing Suge's EP for free from bandcamp. No seriously do.

the EP also features one song from each collaborator, so you can deffo see who brings what to the table.

Here's the only Video I could find to link. It's Emay's offering called Sleep

A track of niceness for your friday entertainment

Hi there. Today is yet again friday. Yesterday was thursday. Yesterday thursday was also superday. At least down at the cinéplaza. Superday means it's dead cheap to see a movie. Possibly even cheaper than downloading it illegally. Cheapity cheap.

I saw Scott Pilgrim vs. 7 badass dudes and it was erm badass. It had me in a continuous giggling fit for the whole whatever time it lasted. Honestly, I felt sorry for everyone behind me (literally everyone. Front row tickets, baby) for having to hear me snorting like a pig, wheezing like a dying asthmatic and squealing like a bi*ch for 2 hours. So yeah sorry. Apology accepted?

Good.

Down to business.

Got blasted with this strip-club-banger this morning from here or here and holymoly if it hasn't been playing on repeat (read: more than once) since.

Eating Paper With Butter - Moomoo

Check it out. It's also badass

Zola Jesus - Poor Animal

Yes yes I know. I don't normally do the whole "multiple-posts-per-day-thing", but as I happily just came across this little brand spanking new track from Zola Jesus I threw what little respect I have for principles out of the window.

Zola Jesus' Poor Animal is half of the Poor Animal/I Cant Stand limited edition 7” out on Souterrain Transmissions on November 1st.

Zola Jesus - Poor Animal by souterraintransmissions

If your not yet familiarised with the lovely Zola (Nika Roza Danilova) then you should check out her goth-pop antics on her recently released Stridulum II record.

Total Warr

You know when music has a distict sound to it? A sound that you recognize from somewhere, but aren't quite sure where from.

Yeah well that's not the case with the French/Brooklynite fellas who form Total Warr.

I'm pretty sure I know where I recognize the sounds, going around on their new Cascades EP, from, but please do correct me if I'm completely off the ball.

Cascades sounds like a couple of guys picked up a VSS-30 from somewhere and decided to make their own, "vintage"-synth using Animal Collective, pop tunes.

Rather well too.

Cascades is four songs of musical avant-pop with sometimes clever, sometimes just silly vocal parts and enough bass to make me a "happy bunny" and make my neighbours not erm... happy bunnies. Speaking of happy, the whole EP has quite the cheery, jovial feel to it which is amusing as the lyrics seemed to be a lot about hating someone. Contradictions in music are great no?

You's can listen/buy it from Hi Scores Recording's bandcamp page

Blackbird Blackbird Featuring Steffaloo

So this morning my boy Mikey S. aka. Blackbird Blackbird hit me with his new track Fly featuring Steffaloo.

When I say my boy I don't literally mean he's my boy. In fact me and Mikey aren't related in any kind of way.

But I guess I had a point to make with this post as well as denying that Blackbird Blackbird is my son. Possibly about the music.

'Tis a tidy track people. Essentially a reworking of his own earlier one.

This one:

It sounds a bit less rough and a bit more complete and a bit like this:

Blackbird Blackbird - Fly (Feat. Steffaloo)

This of course isn't the first collaboration done with Steffaloo. He's also done this one:

Calories - Basic Nature

I'm not sure whether I love or hate this album. Some of the 15 tracks on it are the coolest sounding punkey ones I've heard this year, but some of the tracks try to do me an Incubus/Snow Patrol-esque kick-in-the-balls. My memory is telling me that I'm not overly fond of being kicked in the balls.

BUT

I've still been listening to it quite a bit and that, if anything, should say that it's a bit of alright. AND it's out on Tough Love Records, which is rapidly becoming my favourite outlet of great new musiqué, and means it's got to be awesome.

Oh yeah if you're terrible at retrieving information from pictures (for example the one above) or titles of posts I should probably specify that I'm talking about Calories' Basic Nature album

You too can listen to it here (website) or here (spotify) or bits of it here:

Eternal Summers

Eternal Summers have just squeezed out their debut full length Silver. It's out on Kanine Records ie. the same one as the likes of Surfer Blood & Chairlift

The majority of the songs (female vocals) sound exactly as I'd imagine The Drums to sound if their singer was Glasser instead of a "very camp bro".

Silver isn't anything new and sounds like a lot of stuff being made at the mo' but as long as suckers like me keep loving these kind of tunes, bands'll be popping up everywhere with these beachey anthems

You can listen to Silver on Spotify

Friday Morning

I feel positively awesome this fine morning.
Even though I was "out" last night there's no trace of a hangover.

Brilliant.

Yesterday's level of intoxication was at the level where, upon getting home, I thought it would be a good idea to start reading Bret Easton Ellis' Glamorama. And you know when it's hard to read even the kebab shop's menu, it's at least erm... twice as hard to read an actual book with actual pages and words. I think Glamorama started quite well. Not sure what happened or what it's about and I might have to go over it again.

Anyway

This tune was the first thing I wanted to listen to this morning. Rather loudly too may I add. Sorry neighbours.
